From 1979 the club took three years to regain Senior status, when the Damien Reid captained side won the Intermediate Championship in 1982 in a thrilling final win over St. Josephs at Ardee. Mattock returned to Intermediate from 1986 to 1998, winning 3 DMP Shields & 2 Intermediate League titles in that period.
