Darver - 23rdAugust 2011.
Final Score (after extra time): Mellifont Rovers: 3-08 Cooley

Fulltime score (normal time): Mellifont Rovers: 2-06 Cooley
Kickams: 0-12 (draw)
On a lovely calm August evening, Mellifont Rovers and Cooley
Kickams U13s served up an epic Div2 final that finished level even after extra
time.
Early points by Dean Conlon and Nathan Murphy settled
Mellifont but these two well matched sides were separated in the first half by
Mellifont’s ability to get goals – one each from Sean Clarke and Ben Markey.
Further points from Dean Conlon and Aaron McCabe meant they went in 2-04 to 0-5
to the good at half time.
In the second period Cooley came at Mellifont in droves and
picked off some tremendous points but were unable to get the goal they wanted,
due mainly to a number of superb saves by Mellifont man of the match, Craig
Corrigan. Mellifont only succeed in
scoring a further two point in normal time – Aaron McCabe and Jason McKeown the finishers - in reply to Cooley’s 7 points tally. This left the teams
deadlocked at 2-06 to 0-12 at the end of normal time.
Extra time was called for and in the first 8-minute period,
Cooley eventually breached the Mellifont defence for a well-worked goal that
looked like the match winner. Jason McKeown and Nathan Murphy kept Mellifont’s
hopes alive with a point apiece.
By the second period of extra time the players were dead on
their feet but Mellifont, showing a tremendous never say die spirit, pushed forward
once more and after a surging run at the Cooley goal by Jason McKeown, the same
player somehow got his foot to the ball and banged it to the net. The sides
were level again - a fair result on the night leaving the spectators relishing
the prospects of the replay.
